I bought this book as a reference and loved the preview chapters on Kindle while I awaited the book's arrival. It has 439 pages with everything you want to know, need to know, and might be afraid to know about first aid for your dog or cat. Like any medical reference book, it is best to study it ahead of time prior to the need to use it. Get yourself familiarized with the contents so that you know exactly where to look to find information you need when and if the time for first aid arises. It's just one of several resources. In case of a true emergency I would probably use my cell phone to look up info quickly and call my vet. But by reading this book ahead of time I can learn how to handle situations that don't require a vet or if a true emergency exits, I can learn ahead of time how to handle it until help arrives. There is a section about supplies to keep on hand which I think is invaluable. I have a fairly well equipped first aid kit for my service dog but did not have honey or Karo syrup for shock or duct tape for immobilizing on a firm surface. There is an extensive list of essential items starting on page 3. I hope I never have to use emergency first aid on my dog, but if that day comes I will be prepared.
Absolutely fantastic book. Very comprehensive on first aid and medicines for pets.I only saw 1 problem with this book. On page 4 there is a medicine chart that recommended Kaopectate for cats. It is ok ONLY if it does not contain bismuth subsalicylates. The book is organized well and very easy to read and understand all of the advice and procedures to use for your pet. It has a great alphabetized symptom guide to help you find you pet's problems fast. This was a home run. Buy this book and avoid all information on the internet pet forums if possible. I have seen so many conflicting pieces of information posted by non-vets/non-vet technicians that is very dangerous if not outright deadly to pets.My vets office was recently bought out by a big box medical chain (VCA) and it sucks now. Before, my vet had a very small hometown feel to it.( I live in a big city) They took time with my pets and their rates were not crazy. VCA came in, fired all of the vets and most of the techs at my vet and it just isn't the same. Their bedside manner is lousy with my pets and the new vets just don't seem to care much. Their rates are insanely expensive as well. I refuse to get raked over the coals by these thieves. They know you love your pet and they take advantage of it. It's getting more expensive to own a cat than it is to own a damn Ferrari. VCA has basically destroyed most of the veterinary clinics in my area. They are pushing things to a point where it will be too expensive to give pets proper medical care. Either pets will abandoned at the shelters/outside more for being sick, or they will be euthanized because people don't have hundreds of dollars to pay for lab tests, x-rays and other diagnostic treatments and medicines.Anyways, buy this book and save some money. I would also cross check things on the internet with reputable sites. When in doubt, go to the vet. Your pet is your best friend and his/her life is worth it.
I have relied on this book for years, however our new puppy found it, decided it must be a toy, and chewed it to pieces. Enough remained for me to read the title and credits, so I immediately reordered. I've already gone to the replacement twice - once for upset stomach due to eating things he shouldn't, and the other for a minor ear issue. Five stars for a book every dog owner should have in their toolbox!

Pretty much even information between dogs and cats.This is how the Military writes their book for field work for Navy Corpsman . Simple to a degree but made to save a life.If your in over your head go to the veterinarian .
So informative and helpful. My friend's dog's foot was totally swollen up and they did not want to send him to a vet so they came to me asking what to do. I didn't know but I grabbed this book and easily found some recommendations- and they helped! Not that this book should ever be used in lieu of taking your pet to the vet, but it's nice to know some of the background information!
I bought this book in 2013 and while using it tonight to see what I needed to do after my dog got an injury at the park, I thought it was high time I reviewed. I use this book all the time, and it's been a great help and a money saver. It has a guide for every injury/issue you could imagine, and tells you whether to call your vet now, later or as needed. There are clear, step-by-step instructions for everything, from every day stuff to nightmare stuff. I'm the type of person who will rush my pets to the vet for small things, so it's been great to have a guide like this. It's been invaluable, very informative, and I love having it on-hand. Highly recommend for anyone with cats or dogs.
This book has taught me a good deal about first aid for dogs and cats. It gives many examples of common human medicines that can be used for animals. There are also many useful first aid tips such as how to make an improvised muzzle for your dog so that he can't bite you when you are trying to help him. Although it contains many spelling and grammar errors throughout the book, (It may be just the Kindle version) they do not cause me any trouble at all as it is still clear as to what the author is trying to tell you. I volunteer weekly at a local animal shelter and I have found this book to be an invaluable resource for my work. All in all, get this book if you would like to know how to perform basic first aid skills on your dogs and cats during an emergency.
