Sheldrake covers a number of science taboos in such a matter-of-fact, logical way that it's hard to imagine that the scientific community would disagree. But they do. And vehemently... which I think only furthers his cause.I can't say I could get my head around every example he gave, though I remain an open-minded skeptic. But a large majority of the "scientific truths" he exposes as really being open to debate was eye-opening. I agree with his theory that science would do well to rid itself of much of its hardened dogma, and ease up on it's Holy Inquisition of any poor soul who dares to dissent.About halfway through the book I thought it would be interesting to see if Sheldrake had any TED talks I could watch. I was shocked to find that this learned, logically thinking biologist's TED talk was banned! Who gets banned? If you read the comments as to why, it again reinforces his point.I very much recommend this book to all.
I have been following on Dr. Sheldrake for some 10 years. He has had an immense influence on my life and my approach to others in a positive way. I think he is the Aristotle of 21st century. He is a very brave gentleman also which stands up to Dawkins and his alike in coolest possible manner with DATA . That is one huge advantage of Dr. Sheldrake and that is his gathered at times double blind data. He finally showed that Telepathy is not just in your head and the reason it was almost a failure was because subjects tested were not next of kins. He shows 10X at times more response compare to placebo (In case of the mother and challenged child). Very impressive. I wish Gentlemen like Dr. Sheldrake would have been nominated for Noble Peace prize. He deserves it. He has made science for many of us scientists and Drs. so much fun and open with more to discoveries. At times you have to scrutinize science itself when it becomes a religon by itself not a way of discovery.
Rupert Sheldrake should be awarded the Nobel Prize in science. He applied his Cambridge education by doing real science in the interest of furthering knowledge, and he delivered the goods on a shoestring budget. His evidence for psi is convincing and compelling enough to make him the target of psi deniers everywhere, such that they must invent excuses for their own inability to face facts. And still, the man is a virtual paragon of courtesy and manners against an army of angry, red-faced pseudo skeptics, ready to denounce him as a charlatan without so much as a glance at evidence. We don't need no pseudo skeptics and their phony badges of authority to realize that they are the agents of dogma, whereas Rupert Sheldrake is an agent of true scientific inquiry. Thanks go to Rupert Sheldrake for writing this book, and showing us that there is more under heaven and earth than may be found in the materialist philosophy.
A brilliant and vital work. Many free thinkers understand how the legal and financial factions within society have handcuffed or hampered new ways or thinking in science that are relevant, and invite us to explore further nuances in the rules that currently govern "modern" scientific thought. The author, one such free thinker with extensive training in biology, presents quite compellingly and demonstrates world class academic research while staying within the realms of his research training. A must read for those who shall shape the future's economy in health.
As advertised, this is meant to open minds to alternatives in science (and other thinking). I find the resonance idea not quite believable, though it could stand in for the way a system with several evolved features tends to remain stable because some of those features bat the system back into the groove when something goes haywire with one. In other words, their summation gives the appearance of a Platonic form.Given this, and the author's very open-minded approach to spirituatlism, his rejection of climate skepticism was profoundly disappointing (and, by the way, wrong). One is put in mind of Galileo: moons of Saturn, fine; moon of Earth, sure. Earth as moon of the Sun? That's not skepticism, that's heresy!
I am still double checking all the citations that the author puts forth, but I give this book a very high rating simply for lucidly asking the questions.So many assumptions go unanalyzed in our world, but there are people out there doing the research which questions those assumptions. Mr. Sheldrake takes a hard look at the philosophy and politics of why that research is not more widely known. He presents the data and even proposes experiments and self-analysis for scientists who wish to go further.Definitely food for thought!
I like this book because it attacks dogmas that have been developed in the scientific community. It seems like science is becoming a religion, and Sheldrake put it into words better than I could. However, with that said be warned that this book is also Sheldrake trying to sell his new age -ish theory of everything. Keep your thinking cap on, and don't let your brain fall out trying to be open minded.
I found the book intellectually challenging ( which translates a bit difficult to read ). In general the arguments and insights are very compelling and ring of truth. The scientific world and medical world have evolved into a secular religion. Like all religions if you don’t believe your a heretic.
