I have read the first book of the series “Russian Treasures” written by Elvira Baryakina. I must say the story captured me from the first sentence to the very end of the book. The author put me in a realistic slice of the tragic Russian history masterly using her profound knowledge of that period. With a sinking heart, I followed the sarcastic protagonist Klim and his love brave Nina who wanted to run away from the surrounded them chaos. I felt like I was trapped together with Klim and Nina in a cage expecting to be the next victim of the revolutionary hasher. The language of the author is rich with epithets and metaphors which make a reader to picture the narration easily. For example, when Klim visited Nina at her countryside manor and did not talk about the purpose of his stay, he “lived like a lazy schoolboy skipping classes.”Characters had their specific language based on their social status: uneducated workers and soldiers could not read and pronounce the words correctly while the nobles could keep up the intelligent conversation. All various personages acted reasonably according to their beliefs and temperament.I recommend this book to the readers who are interested in Russian history and enjoy novels with a dynamic narration.

I just finished this book and I want to put down some thoughts. Klim and Nina's love story is so beautiful! And it all happened in the midst of WW1 and than a revolution and civil war. I just can't imagine myself living in this time and experience what millions of Russians were facing every day.Reading Russian Treasures made me want to learn more about Russian history in 20th century. There were so many interesting quotes like: "Unhappiness is either the result of guilt from the past or fear of the future. It is not the present moment we fear but sufferings that still lie ahead. However, in fact, we will never actually live in that terrible future. All we can only ever live is the present, and we generally manage to deal with it."This novel is the first book in the series of three. I can't wait to read the rest of them.

Historical novels could be tricky enough. Authors could mix up events, epochs, historical characters. When you read novels of Ms.Baryakina you immediately know all events, epochs and characters on its places. Very catchy, so you can spend hours reading this author and wondering after you read the last page if there are more books out there. That's happend to me, I've red everything, and can't wait for the new masterpiece. Please write more!!!!

Every aspect of Russian Treasures is captivating. I felt like I had been transported to Russia of 1917 when the Bolshevik Revolution destroyed the old Tsarist regime. The historical details are expertly described but they don’t overload a reader. The Russian culture was described in a intriguing style, combined with poetry, popular believes, and customs. You meet the wealthy and the poor, the mighty and the disenfranchised, the Russians, the Chinese, the British, the Latvians, etc. It’s a whole world “gone with the wind.”I enjoyed this novel immensely and definitely recommend it for fans of historical fiction.

I love this book! Each character represent different political/social groups during that time period. The delicate love was beautifully depicted until I can feel what Nina was going thru and the experiences of Klim. The book reflects on theat specific history in such a detail, I can just imagine how the life was during that turning point of Russia! The story was woven so amazingly, I can not stop reading. I would definitely recommend the book!

This book is a fantastic blend of history and fiction. From beginning to end, the characters, settings, and multiple plots all feel real, yet it has those elements of fiction we all love: a large cast of characters with their own personalities, goals, and faults; vibrant settings; and plots and subplots with so many twists and turns that it will keep you turning pages to find out what happens next. Whether you know anything about Russian history or not, this book is sure to entertain you and keep you on the edge of your seat as you keep reading to learn what will happen next.

There are many sides to every story, and Ms. Baryakina introduces a variety of characters who took part in the Russian revolution and civil war. We meet Bolsheviks and their opponents, British soldiers and Chinese mercenaries, military men, civilians, and so on. It was a great pleasure to spend some time in their world.

I always enjoy stories, which show life from different points of view. Sometimes we see the world from the perspective of Klim Rogov, a journalist who makes fun of Bolsheviks in every possible way, and sometimes we see it from his cousin Lubochka's, who serves the Reds because it’s lucrative. Then, we meet Osip, a devoted Bolshevik believing that communists are real defenders of the working class.I loved the two main characters, Klim and his wife Nina, and the way the book explores Russian history and human nature through their eyes.
