Review

Advance Praise for Reasons to Believe: A flagship volume for contemporary apologetics. This book should be required reading for every Catholic college student and especially for every priest, seminarian, and deacon.  This is apologetics made fascinating.  Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR  An outstanding book. Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. (Denver Archdiocese) The definitive book on the subject of apologetics. Marcus Grodi, TV host, The Journey Home A cohesive vision of God s kingdom that enables people more fully to understand, live, and defend the truth of the Catholic Church.... This is a book many have been waiting for. Jeff Cavins, author of My Life on the Rock Relying on Scripture, history, and logic, Hahn offers clear and compelling reasons to embrace the Catholic Faith and to defend that Faith, charitably and joyfully. He shows us yet again not just what to say, but how to say it. Patrick Madrid, author of Search and Rescue and Does the Bible Really Say That? Hahn does more than respond to our doubts. He shows us a God who has a plan for history and for each of our lives. David Scott, author of The Catholic Passion Hahn s gently expressed enthusiasm for theology is infectious.... This work will help those who are inquiring about the Catholic Church to take the leap, and those already within the fold to appreciate all the more the biblical basis for, and unique fullness of, the Catholic faith. Dave Armstrong, author of A Biblical Defense of Catholicism A great aid to anyone interested in the biblical, patristic, and historical  reasons to believe in Jesus Christ as a Catholic Christian.  John Michael Talbot, songwriter; founder of The Brothers and Sisters of Charity at Little Portion Hermitage Scott Hahn, perhaps Catholicism's leading evangelist in English, takes the next step....a book for believers who want to grow stronger in their faith and share it with others, and for inquirers who search for a belief that satisfies both the mind and the heart. Fr. C. J. McCloskey III, Research Fellow, Faith and Reason Institute, Washington, DC Hahn knows how to write for us ordinary people. Mark P. Shea, CatholicExchange.com Very highly recommended.  Thomas Howard, author of On Being Catholic Often we are asked to give an account of the hope that is in us, to explain our Catholic faith. In Reasons to Believe, Scott Hahn offers that explanation in a clear, cogent, and compelling manner, by answering the most frequently raised questions about aspects of Church teaching. It is a must-read for Catholics who want to be able to explain the faith they hold and cherish. This work should be of immense value. Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl (Archdiocese of Washington, DC) --Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl (Archdiocese of Washington, DC)

This is a good read, but Scott Hahn is too intelligent for me. I wish he would write so everyone could understand without having to read it over and over. I will order one of his other books.

Scott Hahn (born 1957) is an ex-Presbyterian convert to Catholicism; he currently teaches at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, and has written many books such as Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots,Reasons to Believe: How to Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith,The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth, etc. His testimony is found in Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism].He wrote in the first chapter of this 2007 book, "This book is a summons for Catholics to fulfill the duty that St. Peter spelled out. It's not enough for us just to FEEL hopeful, and then hope that our hope will be contagious. St. Peter [1 Pet 3:15] wants us to prepare a defensible account of our hope, showing that its foundations are ushakable, grounded as they are in ultimate reality... We're talking about theology... that branch of theology known as apologetics---the art of explaining and defending the faith." (Pg. 10)He points out, "faith is compatible with reason---in fact, the groundbreakers in many sciences were devout believers. Witness the accomplishments of Nicholaus Compernicus (a priest) in astronomy, Blaise Pascal (a lay apologist) in mathematics, Gregor Mendel (a monk) in genetics, Louis Pasteur in biology, Antoine Lavosier in chemistry, John con Neumann in computer science, and Enrico Fermi and Edwin Schrodinger in physics. That's a short list, and it includes only Roman Catholics; a long list could continue for pages." (Pg. 16)He recounts a conversation he had with an Evangelical, who asserted, "'There's no place in your worshp for someone to say, 'I accept Jesus Christ into my heart as my personal Lord and Savior.' [Hahn replied] "Where is that in the Bible?" My friend was taken aback... My friend thought for a moment before acknowledging that it wasn't in the Bible, though he'd always assumed it was. That Evangelical custom is a ritual, a 'liturgy,' kind of like the Catholic Mass. It is part of the now-sizeable body of Evangelical traditions---along with 'altar calls' and the 'Sinner's Prayer.' Even though it isn't 'biblical,' strictly speaking, Catholics can acknowledge it as a beautiful rite." (Pg. 71)He states, "St. Paul emphasized that, just as there is one Lord and one god, so there is 'one faith, one baptism.' (Eph 4:5)... Some people object that this 'Church' is a purely spiritual or merely figurative reality. But that is not what Paul seems to mean when he speaks of the Church as the 'body' of Christ. For a body is the visible part of a being endowed with a soul. If Paul had wanted to describe a purely spiritual Church, he could have called it the 'soul' of Christ, but 'body' would be an unlikely choice..." (Pg. 78-79)Hahn's book will be of interest to anyone studying Catholic apologetics.

Although this book had some good information. I found the second half of the book hard to read and talked too much about David. That part did not help me to better defend ny faith.

Scottt Hahn is an amazing writer. He approaches apologetics from a converts viewpoint and a talent for writing in a clear, concise manner based on a complete mastery of this subject. Recommended without reservation.

Beautifully written about a beautiful topic. I am a convert to the Catholic Church and thank Dr. Hahn for his teaching.

Dr. Hahn demonstrates his oft-cited debt to Dr. RC Sproul in this little introduction to Christian apologetics. Despite the Catholic/Protestant difference, the influence of Dr. Sproul on Dr. Hahn is evident in this work. Including, I think, a misunderstanding of presuppositional apologetics as a form of fideism. That mild criticism aside, this is a fine work and a solid introduction that could be equally useful for personal or group study.Dr. Hahn provides the introduction by way of the common ground of natural philosophy and theology that all men share in common. With a basic understanding of the laws of logic, Dr. Hahn provides deep insight into the logic and reasoning tools for apologetics. In the second part, Dr. Hahn focuses on the areas of distinction that separate Catholic and Protestant and in the process provides the biblical tools needed to defend the Catholic faith with scripture. In the final portion of the book, Dr. Hahn returns to a theme familiar to any who have read his other works, the importance of covenant theology in understanding salvation history which reveals God at work in our lives and in the life of his kingdom, the church. The text is easy to read and well organized as is common for Dr. Hahn's work. Like his mentor, Dr. Sproul, he has a gift for sharing complex issues in a way that makes them seem almost common sense. Always an enjoyable and rewarding study, Dr. Hahn has once again given us much food for thought on how we can more effectively share our faith.

Great for my husband who has a lot of questions about the Faith
