As a pediatrician who numbers children and adolescents with Autism among my patients, I found the concept of a detective in the Autistic Spectrum fascinating. Just like I find Sheldon of "The Big Bang Theory" who clearly has Aspergers Syndrome fascinating and the spin off TV series "Young Sheldon" greatly interesting, I just had to launch into this story by Michael Lease. I was not disappointed! Also of interest in the story in Mr. Roper's colleague, the Chief Detective Inspector, who demonstrates remarkable empathy and has great insight how to relate to his odd subordinate, Mr. Roper. Were more of us capable of such patience and tolerance of persons not like us, the world would be a much better place. This is a great read. I am looking forward to starting the sequel. Perhaps these characters could become the focus of a BBC TV series also available to the American public. Hope so!
I enjoyed the plot and characters, especially the autistic investigator and his older detective mentor. This is the story about a brilliant but distant Sherlock, who desperately needs a caring father figure who is his Watson, a human shield against people who are hostile to an “oddball†in a rigid police organization. That said, the grammar, syntax, punctuation errors were off-putting, and the unexpected point of view changes—sometimes 3 in 5 paragraphs—threw me out of the story. This author needs an editor or at least someone to proof his work.
I bought this as it was recommended on Facebook, and am very glad I did so. A gripping story, engaging characters, I am looking forward to the next in the series, and hope it doesn't take too long.
It’s a good idea but poorly executed. Besides the woodeness and one-dimensionality of the characters, there are just too many grammar and punctuation mistakes for this to have been published.
An admirable first effort, with an appealing protagonist partnership: the antisocial autistic young genius, who can’t read body language or understand jokes, and the older DCI who takes him under his wing.I only wish the author had invested in a good editor, as his excessive use of passive voice; telling, rather than showing the story; and countless punctuation problems (please, someone, lend me a comma!) detracted from what was otherwise a fairly solid story.I hope he keeps at it—and hires a good editor for his next books! We all need the eyes of outsiders to make our work better. No writer is an island, nor should he be.3 ½ stars for entertainment value and three-dimensional characters, particularly DCI Brian Hooley.
A very enjoyable read, with the interesting character of Jonathan Roper, a police investigator who has autism. The very behaviours which made him prone to bullying as a child and awkward in the company of adults, help him solve a very puzzling case which begins with the gruesome death of a billionaire and ends with genetic modification. In between, a key player, Detective Hooley is comfortable to have Roper assigned to him. Together they work hard to solve the murder. Only a slight grizzle - a little more proofreading was needed but I will certainly add the second book in the series to my To Be Read pile.
I really enjoyed this book. British Detective books are my favorite and this one featured a wonderful new detective that just happens to be autistic. I confess I know virtually nothing about autism and really enjoyed the way this book gave some insight into this condition without making it about the condition. It is all about the mystery and how it is resolved with the help of the brilliant Jonathan Roper. I found all of the characters very relatable and enjoyable. I have downloaded the next book in the series and look forward to much more from this author. Highly recommend
A debut novel, I believe, and a pretty-well-told tale. The premise of an autistic savant detective is a good one, and well-done. The narrative is uneven. It started off quite good, but its quality drops off a bit toward the end. Still, reading this story was a pleasant way to spend a few hours. I did not pay a lot for it, and it was worth every penny. There was, in my opinion, absolutely NO objectionable content, which is rare these days.
