Until I heard the author speak about his career and I read this book, I thought Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission officers mostly ambled through Florida hammocks during daylight hours issuing citations to fishermen and hunters who couldn’t produce an up-to-date license. Backcountry Lawman showed me another world. Most of Bob H. Lee's work as a game warden took place at night in places I would never be caught. Especially at night. Alone. “There’s nothing else like hunting down another human in the dark by yourself," Lee writes. The only things I wanted that the book didn’t provide were longer fingernails and a map of the area Lee patrolled. I kept referring to the navigation app on my phone. I highly recommend the book to those who love the outdoors, nature, and stories so scary you can throw away your nail clippers.
This book literally changed my life! I changed careers and am now a Game Warden. The only thing I didn’t like about this book is how fast I read it. I could not put it down and stayed up all night reading it. Warning: DO NOT LOAN THIS BOOK TO ANYONE! You probably won’t get it back.
Well, I'm not the talented, gripping writer that Bob Lee is, so this won't be very long. What I want to convey is my enthusiasm for this book. It's a well-written, intelligent, fact-filled, page-turner, for sure. My enthusiasm was so great that I contacted Bob, a total stranger to me, about doing a book signing and talk at my Central Florida resort, Lakeside Inn, Mount Dora, Florida, in May of this year. Boy, is he full of good, well-told stories!
I've always been interested in a career involving wildlife, but instead I became a writer and editor. Pretty far cry from the woods! This book was a vicarious trip through 30 years of what might have been if I'd gone a different way. Bob Lee is either a very good writer or had a very good editor. His book carried me right along from the very first page. I couldn't wait to see what would happen in each chapter. I don't know how he had the nerve to deal with the rednecks and poachers like he did, but he seemed to manage to respect them while protecting wildlife. Good job Bob.
What an interesting, and often humorous look at life as a Wildlife Officer. I thank Bob Lee, and all present officers out there, that help smooth relations between animals and misbehaving humans. Not easy, often risky, and yet so necessary a profession. A great read !
This is an entertaining and exciting account of the adventures of a game warden in rural Florida. The skills that made Lee a successful and talented game warden--eye for details, knowledge of his field, people smarts--serve him well as a storyteller. You are there. You see, hear, smell, feel, and, in a case or two, taste the adventure. The reader gets a real visceral sense of life as a game warden. One can't help but wonder how many of these close calls and dangerous night prowlings he shared with his family. Being a backcountry lawman is not for the faint of heart. Lee is a tenacious and persistent tracker with a passion for upholding the law. The author, however, is not above finding humor in some of his predicaments--though probably funnier now than they were at the time. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in law enforcement, wildlife, hunting, fishing, conservation, poaching, Florida history, outdoor adventure or just looking for a good read into a world little known to many of us.
If you have a little bit of wanna-be Backcountry Lawman in you, don't miss reading this book. Bob Lee's storytelling makes you feel as if you're on the stake-out beside him. This book has just the right measure of suspense, action and humor. My family has gone through 4 copies, and I've just ordered another as a Christmas gift!
If anyone had told me I'd even read a book about about a "game warden" in Florida, I'd have thought they didn't know my reading tastes. But when our book club chose it, not only did I read it ... I LOVED it! It is interesting, educational, funny, suspenseful and more ... and so well written! You don't have to be a hunter, poacher or lawman to stay tuned in, either. The author's writing style makes it an easy, yet very entertaining read.
