I have been learning and speaking Spanish for many years and learning Russian for three years finding it hard going. Anthony Metivier's method is pure genius. It builds on one of the oldest and reliable mnemonic techniques known to man with a twist: learn the alphabet of the new language you are learning and base and build your memory storehouse on that alphabet. It brings learning a language right back to fundamentals. Every time you place a vocabulary word in the place set aside in the alphabet place reserved for words beginning with the relevant letter you revise and reinforce all your previous learned vocabulary words silently and subconsciously, constantly reinforcing your familiarity with the new language alphabet and constantly reinforcing the foundations of your knowledge without having to constantly revise to check if you remembered - simply because you did remember. I never gave much time to learning the alphabet of a new language, just enough to get by and start learning grammar and verbs and all that stuff. Now the alphabet has become fundamental. You literally can memorize the dictionary! The language becomes no longer a "second" language but becomes your own. Highly recommended!
I chose this book to help me to retain more vocabulary of the Russian Language. I found the techniques of memorization in the book very creative and helpful in utilizing a new way to memorize vocabulary. Memorizing by rote gets very dull and you can forget if you don't use the words. The author's idea of using "Memory Palaces" helped me to add about 60 more vocabulary words to my list of Russian words. One point I will make that I had to adjust- I have not been to as many places as the author and I don't recall as many locations as he does. I live in a rural area with not much around. So, I started with my own house. I used two rooms in my home and attached a word to each piece of furniture in the room. I did this in a systematic way. I also made up a story to keep me moving around the room so as to remember what word came next. I think the author has introduced a great system for helping with memorization of vocabulary. He has a great imagination that he shares with his readers and gives them an interesting way to learn vocabulary of a foreign language.
I have read and put into practice the ideas in this book. The ideas presented are not your normal for memorizing vocabulary. that is why the book is good. It presents several DIFFERENT ideas to you that are possible for everyone , if given the time and effort. don't dismiss this book. If you have struggled with memorizing vocabulary in the past this book will give you several suggestions that will help you tremendously.
The book outlined his method, but to expand and use it fully he wanted you to purchase his program. Basically, the book was an infomercial for his other product.
The method spelled out in this book works. My only regret is that I did not discover it earlier. After nearly 6-months of studying Russian I had reached a point of exasperation with retention that would quickly deteriorate soon after it was established. I turned to amazon out of desperation, and I found this book. It is the most effective tool I've found for improving one's memory, particularly when it comes to the study of a new language. Not only does it aid in learning new material, but, more importantly, that material becomes indelibly etched in the mind's eye. Say goodbye to the endless frustration of rote learning as you will actually enjoy the challenges and creative opportunities that come with using this book's method to store information.
Definitely worth reading. The memorization techniques here are very valuable. They have helped me learn a lot of Russian vocabulary as well helped me memorize other things.I emailed the author and he was really nice. I started listening to his podcast too.I wish it had more suggestions on what to memorize, but I suppose that's why I own a Russian-English dictionary. I do like this book and I recommend it for anyone learning Russian, a language, or anything with high memorization needs like anatomy, chemistry, music theory, or whatever. The author has several books aimed at learning other topics. I want to try reading about memorizing poetry from him.
I was expecting a book where there was actually some Russian words to learn. The book is basically about memory techniques. These memory techniques would be good if they included some actual vocabulary. You are only shown how to memorise the alphabet and a couple of words. I'm not sure what the point of this book is. if you want to learn some Russian vocabulary then look elsewhere.
I didn't really find this to be very helpful.
