this is not a book, it's a comic book. I would not have bought this if I had known. very disappointing. my view is, America is dumbed down enough as it is. when I buy what I expect to be a book and I get a comic book in its place, it's enough to make you crazy. what, is everybody so lazy and incapable of reading that we need to replace books with comic books? I have no objection to comic books, I just wish this fact was made clear before I bought this.
My son gave this to his dad as a holiday present since my hubby loves everything about climbing and Everest. I never imagined I would see my husband reading a graphic novel, but he did, and loved it. Great choice on my son's part, and I'm so happy my hubby found it to be an excellent book. He is quite picky about what he reads, so if he liked it, it was good.
Review by my 10 year old son: This book was interesting and very fun to read. I never new there was a place called Kathmandu. I thought it was a shop.
The dramatic first ascent of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, gets the graphic novel treatment courtesy of Campfire Books, author Lewis Helfand, and illustrator Amit Tayal. The narrative interweaves the lives of New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and Indian Sherpa Tenzing Norgay with the many early attempts to climb Everest.Tenzing Norgay is presented as someone who grew up in proverty and who had to wait his turn to live his lifelong dream as a sherpa and sirdir in the high mountains of the Himalayas. Similarly, the shy Hillary worked as a beekeeper and served in the Second World War before finally getting his big break as a climber. Their first ascent of Everest is presented as the dramatic and suspenseful event that it was. Their careers after Everest are also included in the story, and author Helfand goes to some lengths to suggest that climbing Everest was not necessarily the crowning achievement of their lives. Recommended.
